Official end-of-life dates for the Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR

Cisco published two parallel bulletins on the same day: EOL13603 for the Catalyst 2960-X product family and EOL13602 for the Catalyst 2960-XR product family. Both were later amended (updated November 26, 2022), and both carry identical milestone dates. The dates below apply to the hardware SKUs (WS-C2960X-* and WS-C2960XR-*), including the C1- Cisco ONE variants.

What each milestone means for a running 2960-X fleet

The switches do not stop forwarding packets on any of these dates. What changes is what Cisco will do for you:

  • Software maintenance ended October 31, 2023. Cisco no longer develops, repairs, or tests IOS for these platforms. Non-security bugs you hit today will not be fixed.
  • Security fixes end October 31, 2027. Until then, Cisco may still release a scheduled remedy for a vulnerability. After that date, any newly disclosed CVE affecting the 2960-X/XR stays unpatched permanently, which is the milestone that matters most for audited environments (PCI DSS, HIPAA, CMMC).
  • Service contract renewals end January 29, 2027. This is the nearest hard deadline: after it passes, an expiring SmartNet contract cannot be extended, and new equipment could not be attached to a contract after October 31, 2023.
  • Last date of support is October 31, 2027. TAC cases and contract-based RMA entitlements end; Cisco classifies the product as obsolete.

Practical translation: a 2960-X can keep serving low-risk closets, but any switch that must remain under vendor support or pass a security audit needs a funded replacement plan that completes before late 2027, with contract decisions made before January 2027.

The replacement path: Catalyst 9200L, 9200, and 9300

Cisco's own migration tables point the 2960-X family at the Catalyst 9200L and the 2960-XR family at the modular Catalyst 9200. The logic follows the original positioning:

  • Catalyst 9200L — fixed uplinks (4x1G or 4x10G SFP+ variants) and StackWise-80 stacking at 80 Gbps. This is the like-for-like landing spot for LAN Base 2960-X access closets: Layer 2 access, PoE+, familiar port counts.
  • Catalyst 9200 (modular) — field-replaceable uplink modules and StackWise-160 at 160 Gbps. Cisco maps the IP Lite 2960-XR here, since the XR was the routed-access variant of the family. Note that fixed C9200L and modular C9200 units cannot be mixed in one stack.
  • Catalyst 9300 — the step up where you need full Layer 3 feature depth, StackWise-480 (480 Gbps back-panel stacking), higher PoE budgets, or multigigabit/25G/40G uplink headroom. If a closet is aggregating other switches or running routed access at scale, a refurbished Catalyst 9300 48-port PoE+ (C9300-48P) costs about what a new 9200 does and removes the next forklift.

Model mapping: 2960-X/XR to Catalyst 9200 series

The mappings below are taken from Table 2 of Cisco's EoL bulletins. Treat them as guidance, not a mandate: Cisco matches port count, PoE class, and uplink type, but you should re-validate PoE budget, uplink speed, and stacking design against your actual closet before ordering.

A few SKUs (for example WS-C2960X-24PSQ-L) have no direct replacement listed in the bulletin; for those, size the nearest 9200L by port and PoE requirements.

What actually changes when you migrate

Four things break like-for-like assumptions between a 2960-X and a 9200-class switch:

  • Stacking is incompatible. The 2960-X/XR use FlexStack-Plus (up to 8 members, 80 Gbps over the optional C2960X-STACK module). The 9200 series uses StackWise-80/160 and the 9300 uses StackWise-480. You cannot mix old and new members, so each stack migrates as a complete unit — size your purchase per stack, not per switch.
  • Operating system. The 2960-X runs classic IOS 15.2(x)E; the 9200/9300 run IOS XE. Most access-layer config (VLANs, trunks, port security, QoS) converts cleanly, but expect syntax differences in QoS and authentication (IBNS 2.0-style dot1x) that need a review pass, not a blind paste.
  • Licensing model. The 9200/9300 use IOS XE Network Essentials/Advantage tiers, and Cisco's subscription attach rules have changed several times since launch. When buying refurbished, confirm with your supplier how the license transfers or is re-registered before the hardware ships.
  • Optics and cabling mostly carry over. 1G SFP and 10G SFP+ optics from 2960-X uplinks generally re-seat in 9200L fixed uplinks or 9200 uplink modules of matching speed; verify each optic against the target switch's supported-transceiver matrix rather than assuming.

Where refurbished hardware fits in the exit plan

An EoL-driven refresh is a forced cost, which makes it the classic case for refurbished gear: the Catalyst 9200 and 9300 have been shipping since 2018-2019, so the secondary market is deep, and a tested refurbished unit with warranty typically lands at 40-70% below list. Two sensible plays:

  • Replace forward. Move production closets to refurbished 9200L/9200/9300 units now, well ahead of the January 2027 contract-renewal cutoff and the October 2027 support cliff. Current stock is listed in our networking catalog.
  • Buy cold spares for what remains. If part of your 2960-X estate will intentionally run past 2027 in low-risk roles, used 2960-X units are inexpensive insurance against hardware failure once Cisco RMA entitlement ends. Keep one spare per model per site and mirror the final IOS image and config to it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Cisco Catalyst 2960-X still supported?

Partially. Software maintenance ended October 31, 2023, so no new features or non-security bug fixes are produced. Cisco may still release security fixes until October 31, 2027, and TAC support remains available to customers with active service contracts until that same date, which is the platform's last date of support.

Can I still renew SmartNet on a 2960-X or 2960-XR?

Yes, but only until January 29, 2027 — Cisco's end of service contract renewal date for both families. Adding uncovered switches to a new or existing contract has not been possible since October 31, 2023. After the renewal cutoff, existing contracts simply run to their end dates, with all support ending October 31, 2027.

What is the replacement for the WS-C2960X-48FPD-L?

Cisco's EoL bulletin lists the C9200L-48P-4X (Catalyst 9200L, 48 PoE+ ports, 4x10G SFP+ fixed uplinks) as the replacement. It matches the 48-port 740W PoE+ and 10G uplink profile. Treat bulletin mappings as guidance and confirm PoE budget and stacking design for your closet before ordering.

What is the difference between the 2960-X and the Catalyst 9200?

The 9200 series moves from classic IOS 15.2(x)E to IOS XE, replaces FlexStack-Plus with StackWise-80 (9200L) or StackWise-160 (modular 9200), and introduces Network Essentials/Advantage licensing. The modular 9200 also adds field-replaceable uplink modules. Access-layer configuration concepts carry over, but QoS and 802.1X syntax need conversion.

Can I stack a 2960-X with a Catalyst 9200?

No. The 2960-X/XR use FlexStack-Plus, which is electrically and logically incompatible with the 9200's StackWise-80/160. You also cannot stack fixed C9200L models with modular C9200 models. Plan migrations stack-by-stack: every member of a given stack is replaced in the same maintenance window.

Is it still worth buying a used 2960-X in 2026?

Only for specific roles: cold spares for an existing fleet, lab environments, or isolated low-risk segments. Prices are low, and the hardware is proven, but security fixes end October 31, 2027. For any production closet that must stay patchable and supportable, a refurbished Catalyst 9200 or 9300 is the better spend.
